Casey Jones. If it were a Bob song, maybe not. But the fact that it's a Jerry song though, then yes. Not one of his best efforts.

Mexicali is the worst of the Bob songs played 300+ times. Throwing Stones would have made it had they played it a few more times.

I like almost all those tunes, Bertha is one of my all time favorites.

Of the ones listed LLR is my least fav, although Terrapin was often pretty rough live.

For me it was down to OMSN, Mexicali, & U.S. Blues. I went with OMSN. I enjoy the jams in LLR too much to vote for it, despite how awfully embarrassing the lyrics are.

There really aren't any bad or worst original GD songs just some worst or bad performances of said songs on any given evening up till Brent's departure in July 0f 1990.

I don't necessarily agree with that, i've witnessed some mind bending performances over the years of songs such as US Blues, Mexicali Blues and OMSN.

When Jerry and Phil are on it magic tends to happen and even simple mundane lil tunes take on an entirely different personality.

Check out the OMSN Shoreline 06/16/90 first set closer, View From The Vault DVD.

i see what you're saying. but you're still analyzing too much. it's such a fun poll question. i'm not talking about specific performances. i'm generalizing and just talking about the songs themselves, how a standard version is played i guess.

I don't mean to be a dick, and trust me, few have earned there place in this sewer more than moi, but as Dylan spoke to Lennon, "you guys seldom have anything to say".

This best of, worst of, favorite song nonsense is just Micahbation. I miss the compelling thought provoking (non conspiracy) dialouge that has been a part of this place over the course of the last year.

If you don't mind me sayin, you appear to be a little too polished to have just popped in off the radar screen. Have you owned a handle here in the past?

"This best of, worst of, favorite song nonsense is just Micahbation. I miss the compelling thought provoking (non conspiracy) dialouge that has been a part of this place over the course of the last year."

I agree. Would you care to start some of that dialogue? Compelling conversation still pops up now and again. While it's lacking, I see no problem with these discussions. It sparks the potential for good conversation sometimes, and if not, at least most find it entertaining to some degree. Another point I'd like to make: WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF COMPELLING TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT! How much more can be said about this band that hasn't been said in some way already?

"If you don't mind me sayin, you appear to be a little too polished to have just popped in off the radar screen. Have you owned a handle here in the past?"

I don't mind. No I haven't, but I've read the forums on and off since 2005 I believe. I have no reason to disguise who I am. I've been using the archive for so many years, but I just recently decided to get more involved. What do you mean i'm "too polished?"

I couldn't do this either. There are songs that do not fit for that night or position in a set and that could throw off any well meant intentions. Also that's the problem w/ hearing your favorite band that many times. You and or anybody has the ablility to pick apart investigate and delve into nuanses of a certain song, and I really do not do that. It's way simplier for me if I like it so be it whether there's a vocal miscue or feedback or whathave you.

i don't get why it's difficult for some to do this. it's not a knock on any of their material, i'm merely asking people to chose the song that they enjoy the least overall. it's just a nonsense poll for fun. i was curious to see what vote totals would look like, and so far it looks exactly as i expected it would.

I fucking hate Mexicali and OMSN! Actually, to be more accurate, i hate them because of the fact of how often they were played in the early '70s. Every goddamn show has these songs, and goddamn does it get old! Its the over saturation and being totally barren of any variation whatsoever that get to me... but as purely a great party song to listen to, for some reason I still love the Bobby 'Ace' Saturday Night.

i accidentally included black peter. i just posted a comment under the poll, informing folks not to vote for it.

the reason i included all the other songs is because for each one of those songs, i've had at least one deadhead tell me they don't like that song.

of the ones i excluded, i've only heard one person say they don't like stella blue, and one say the don't like tennessee jed.

It is just too subjective. "One man's trash is another man's treasure", and these are all treasures in their own way.

I don't get why everyone is bitching about this post - I don't see anything wrong with it.

Definitely U.S. Blues for me - all the other ones on that list I really like. I'm amazed so many people picked OMSN and Mexicali, both songs have catchy lyrics and very interesting chord progressions. Mexicali in particular is one of my favorite songs - such a sad story against such an upbeat presentation, it always has a profound effect on me when I listen to it.

U.S. Blues doesn't offend me musically or lyrically, I just find it really boring. I have no idea how it kept the attention of the guys.

Hopefully I can state this clearly.
Something strikes me fishy after clicking on your link. I assume it is some site that you utilized to set up this poll, or maybe something you stumbled upon and thought appropriate to share here. I don’t know, am too cautious in my internet travels to find out, and don’t care what you think about what I think. But the question could easily have been asked in a straight forward manner to the GD forum w/o any external nonsense.

And while I’m putting myself out here again, I have to say that in my time here on archive I don’t recall ever seeing a mediafire link on this forum. I don’t know why your penchant for posting them on the archive makes me uneasy - as I have happily benefited from other styles of file sharing from other posters in the past.

btw, i've loved Black Peter since the 1st time i listened to it on record, and enjoyed it live as well; i'd probably go w/OMSN, altho Mexicali is not too far behind

The site has been around since 1998 and I use it because it allows users to download whatever files I upload with one simple click. other similar websites i've found usually aren't that simple. anyway, believe what you want. if you really think i'm here to try and harm anyone in anyway, then you're simply crazy.

Yeah, "least favorite" or "most frequently skipped" is probably closer to what you meant. I don't think any of those are "worst," which sounds like, "a bunch of these are bad, but which one is the very WORST?" (Not that I think you meant it that way at all!)

Taking it as "most skipped among the most played," I'd have to say that would be OMSN, which for the record I think is a good song -- in fact, for a long time I assumed it was a cover of something by Buddy Holly or somebody like that. (I'm not sure that came out right. "It's so good, I thought they didn't wrie it!" But it does have that classic sound.) I'd just call it Most Skippable (and perhaps by extension my Least Favorite on the list) because it doesn't tend to go much of anywhere, and I've heard it a gazillion times, so within that group, it happens to be the one I do, in fact, skip most often.

LLR I skip sometimes, but I do like the jams. I can sometimes skip a Mexicali, though that can be a mistake. And I could stop before a US Blues encore, though I often do like that one too.

There's actually not any song in that list that I don't think is good, and that I don't like from "some of the time" to "pretty much every time."

"Yeah, "least favorite" or "most frequently skipped" is probably closer to what you meant."

It's exactly what I meant, I just didn't articulate it correctly. You're clearly one of the more rational thinkers here. Thanks for the input.

and to ring, just one more note i'd like to add. i only really see the "what's more annoying" thread as somewhat of a bash on the dead, but the thread didn't yield any negativity, just a bit of discussion. and other than that, i'm not one to criticize this band. virtually every comment i make about this band is a compliment to them, and there is nothing wrong with an occasional critique, which is different than just bashing them.

Nothing personal. Maybe it's me. There's just too much of it lately. I'm just tired of logging in and seeing another "So what song do you hate" "So what do you hate most about Bob" "So which song did Donna ruin the worst" "So did Jerry sound worse before or after his coma" discussion. Anyone would think this was a forum for people who don't like the Grateful Dead. It's like if you happen to like a song, you'd better not mention it or someone here will tell you it sucks, or if you post about a show you really enjoyed, someone will tell you you only think that because you are an idiot who knows nothing about music (or you are a mysterious person named "Kochman"). Even though I'm usually a bystander in such discussions, it gets old. Between that and all the interpersonal ugliness, and the obsession with "trolls," which just seems to have nothing to do with anything, for me, it's getting old.

Hey ringo, as a certain Robbie Robertson penned back in 1969, "Just take what you need and leave the rest."

It is difficult at times, but can be done. And the "what you need" makes it worthwhile ...most of the time.

BTW, your contributions here are part of the "what you need" for many of us.

Well put, Ring. You've mentioned the same core reasons why lately I have stopped by with less frequency. There is certainly enough angst that we run across outside of this forum, that when we want to share thoughts, insights and stories about a band that we're still fond of, i/we really don't need, or want, that kind of negativism added to a seemingly blithe conversation mix. It's easy for folks to jump on a trash whatever bandwagon - I've been there myself - but, I agree, a less negative climate would be more inviting to myself and others who have expressed your same concerns. Like with your thoughtful JGB thread the other day, for some, it may be an art or skill in the way a thread can get hijacked - as a shared, and sometimes witty, stream of consciousness - but senseless, selfish diatribes mostly just kill any conversation from going forward and turn folks away. Instead of finding engaging discussions of late, I've become bored and turned off by the tiresome natterings. A lengthy way of saying I appreciate your trying to be a voice of reason - fair play to you.

A strange list I don't think any of these songs are bad in themselves . In fact some of these are major GD vehicles . I think the "300" times is where the problem is .
Even my least favorite on this list LLR, is not such a bad song in itself, but all those unfelt (as I have said before ) "bad Elvis" versions, with the "no more fucking rain', cheap, lowest common denominator , crowd baiting , that incidentally , goes contrary to the meaning of the song itself , and frankly lame .
Estimated, is one of those part of it is just wonderful, ( those jams that could come out of it !), but Bob's animal impersonation screeches get old .
Some of these just lost their um-mph with time ( OMSN, US Blues ).
As for Sugar Magnolia ...
Pick your Bob Weir end of concert song(s) you would like to hear .
1. The "Jimmy Buffet" version of Good Lovin" ( Pig rolling in grave )
2. The cool cat "Lovelites" ( Pig doing back flips in grave )
3. The gutless take on Chuck Berry's Around and Around, or JBG, or the tip of hat to Chuck, OMSN ( all of which were great early in their rotation ).
4. The long preachy Throwing Stones ( might not have been played 300 times , but sure felt like it ), with a limp dick NFA ( how the mighty have fallen ).
5. Sugar Magnolia , with a burning Jerry solo ...
So it may have been overplayed but ...
Grumpy Bobby bashing ends here .

While Mexicali might be the one I went with Black Peter. Song never did it for me. On the up side I did see 2 fantastic versions of this tune Providence 87 and Vegas 91. Wish it had that same power every night
